our volunteer readers
Once a month from October to May for nearly 25 years, The First R Foundation has sent a group of volunteer readers into each kindergarten and first grade classroom on Cape Ann to bring a world of ideas and adventures to the children. First R’s volunteer readers are business and civic leaders, Cape Ann authors, artists and students who believe in the many positive effects of reading aloud to small children. These readers go into the classrooms to read the books and also to speak about themselves and their love of reading.

To me, First R is the perfect program - it is direct, simple to participate in, and a wonderful way to show our kids in the community that we care about them. I am honored to have been a part of it since the early days and look forward to reading in the future as it is such a fun, joyful activity! Pat Earle's creative idea, and her ability to make it happen, is a model of community activism.
